Page 6 WARD/SANFORD HOUSE ~ c. 1870 230 West K Street History: This classic Italianate house was for many years known as the “Sanford House”. It was the residence of Dr. Sanford, MD, one of two “town doctors” who cared for Benicia residents in the post-world war II era. Most recently, this home was purchased from Dr. Sanford’s heirs by Patrick Ward and family. The Wards have undertaken and nearly com- pleted a complete makeover and renovation that has brought back and most probably surpassed the former glory of this unique residence. Architecture: This imposing Italianate house appears to have undergone a number of changes over time. The building is rectangular in plan with a low pitched roof. A “Widow’s walk” with a turned rail is found at the ridge of the roof. The front entry, which is bracketed by canted bays on either side, is recessed and is accessed via a small wooden stoop. A single- story addition was added on the east elevation circa 1950. For many years this house was clad with stucco which has now been removed to expose the original wood cladding.
