The Benicia Historical society began in 1973.  The purpose of the society is to bring together people interested in the history of Benicia and California.  The society works to preserve the history and heritage of our city for future generations.  Our goal is to enhance historic Benicia through education, communication and community involvement.

Benicia Historical Society Board Member
Ph.D. Candidate
Historical Archaeology Laboratory
Archaeological Research Facility
Department of Anthropology, UC Berkeley

Join David Hyde, archaeologist and PhD Candidate at UC Berkeley, as we dig into Benicia’s buried history, exploring some of the city’s less known (and less visible!) historical sites and stories that only archaeological research can uncover. In this talk, David will outline what archaeology is, what methods archaeologists use, and why archaeological research is worth doing, even in a “historically conscious” town like Benicia. This talk will highlight past archaeological research undertaken in Benicia, areas of potential future research, and the value of archaeology in the contemporary from an economic and community development perspective.

This talk will serve as a great introduction to the Benicia Historical Society and Benicia Historical Museum's upcoming “I Dig Benicia” archaeology event on Saturday, October 20th, 2018 at the Camel Barns.
